Leaked Documents Provide Insight Into Google Search and SEO

Posted on June 18, 2024 in Search Engine Optimization

Blog ImageWebsite owners rely on Google to ensure that people can find them when searching for information online. While Google does provide guidance and recommendations on the ways website owners can help ensure that they will be found in online searches, the best search engine optimization (SEO) practices are often based on experimentation and insights from experts in the field.

The way Google search works is a closely guarded secret. However, some of Google’s internal documents were recently leaked online. SEO experts have been closely analyzing the information, and this has provided them with a better understanding of some of the technical details of Google searches. This may help website owners understand the steps they can take to improve their search rankings.

New Information About Google

Some of the details that people have found when combing through more than 2,500 documents include:

  • Click tracking: A site’s click through rate (CTR), or the number of people who click on a Google search result and visit the site, is an important factor that can influence search rankings. The documents reveal that Google tracks data about clicks, including how often people click on search results and how long they stay on a site after these clicks.

  • Data from Chrome: Google’s Chrome browser is the most popular browser people use to navigate the internet. While Google has claimed that it does not track people’s activities while they use Chrome, the documents suggest that information from Chrome does play a role in Google search. The ways people navigate sites, how long they stay on certain pages, and other behaviors may influence a site’s rankings.

  • Domain authority: Sites may be ranked based on how reliable and authoritative they are considered to be. While Google does not use the Domain Authority rankings created by other sites, the documents show that it has metrics that track a site’s authority to determine whether it is considered to be a reliable source of information.

  • Authorship: Google has emphasized the importance of “experience, expertise, authoritativeness, and trustworthiness” (abbreviated as E-E-A-T) for SEO. The documents show that Google tracks information about the authors of content on websites. An author (such as the owner of a website that provides helpful information) who is known to have experience and expertise in certain areas and is an authoritative and trustworthy source of information will be more likely to rank higher in search results.

These are just a few of the revelations that have confirmed that SEO experts have a strong understanding of the best ways to optimize sites to show up in Google search results. Many of the SEO techniques that have been used in the past will continue to provide value for website owners, and ongoing research into this area can help ensure that sites will follow the best practices to be found in Google searches.
