AI-Powered Changes May Be Coming Soon to Google Search
Advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) are some of the most exciting technological developments taking place in today's world. The release of ChatGPT, an AI chatbot that allows people to enter simple or detailed prompts and generate content ranging from articles to computer code, opened many people's eyes to the benefits of this type of technology. As a result, many companies are racing to incorporate AI into their products and services, and search engines are no exception. As Google looks to make significant updates to its search products, website owners will need to determine how this may affect their search engine optimization (SEO) efforts.
Google's Project Magi
Recently, Microsoft incorporated ChatGPT into its Bing search engine, allowing people to ask questions and have conversations with an AI chatbot as they search for information online. While Google is still used by around 90 percent of people who perform online searches, this new feature led more people to begin using Bing. As a result, Google is taking steps to implement new features, including introducing its own chatbot, which is known as Bard.
Google is also looking to revamp its search engine and offer a variety of new products and features. These efforts are being referred to internally as Project Magi, and they involve a multitude of new uses of AI technology to improve the experience of people who look for information online and browse the web. Some of the features that have been discussed include:
-
A more conversational approach to search that learns what people want to know and provides customized results, including allowing people to make purchases directly from search results pages without the need to visit other websites.
-
A product known as Searchalong that will be incorporated into the Google Chrome browser. This will function as a chatbot that scans the pages people visit and other websites to answer questions people may have, without the need to open up a separate tab and perform a Google search.
-
A tool called GIFI that will use AI to generate customized images when people are using Google Image Search.
-
Increased use of AI in Google Maps to help people search for location information and look up directions.
-
The ability to perform music-related searches through a chatbot.
While these features will be rolled out slowly, they will become available to more people throughout 2023 and beyond.
Since Google is looking to make major changes to the ways people search for information and browse the internet, website owners will need to understand how they can continue to optimize their sites to be found in searches. While many of the tried-and-true SEO techniques will still apply, including creating high-quality content that includes the keywords people are likely to search for, it will also be important to make sure websites answer the questions people are likely to ask when using chatbots to perform searches. By identifying the types of questions people ask and the problems they are looking to solve, website owners can make sure people will be able to find them when searching for information, products, or services using AI-powered tools.
